Rivaldo believes that despite David Luiz’s mistakes last season, the defender can go on to become an ‘important player’ in Arsenal ’s ‘young and inexperienced squad’.

The Brazilian has been heavily criticised for a string of high-profile errors since his move from Chelsea to the Emirates last summer.

Luiz put within a catastrophic performance in the 3-0 defeat to Manchester City after the restart, giving away a penalty and getting himself sent off after coming on as a substitute for the injured Pablo Mari.

The 33-year-old also set an undesirable Premier League record after conceding his fifth spot-kick of the time of year during the Gunners’ 3-2 final-day victory over Watford.

Arsenal still moved to secure Luiz’s future at the club for another period and Brazil legend Rivaldo feels that the centre-back’s wealth of experience can prove to be valuable for Mikel Arteta’s side.

‘David Luiz did not enjoy a great first season with Arsenal, but the club trusted him by renewing his contract and I think the Brazilian defender still has what it takes to play at the big English club, ’ the particular former Barcelona winger told Betfair .

‘He has lots of experience and knows exactly how to manage his energy during a match. He could also be pivotal to help the youngsters in the club.

‘He has lots of  knowledge  about English football plus will improve from last season and could work as an important player in such a young and inexperienced squad that clearly needs some veterans to help them improve. ’

The Gunners are also believed to be the frontrunners in bringing Barcelona’s Philippe Coutinho back in order to the Premier League this summer .

The former Liverpool playmaker has spent the season on loan at Bayern Munich, but, along with Barca reportedly keen to offload him, Rivaldo says the B razil would thrive back in England.

‘Philippe Coutinho will soon return from his loan at Bayern to Barcelona but I doubt he can revive his career there, ’ Rivaldo added.

‘His best option could be returning to English football where this individual spent the best seasons associated with his career and in which his qualities seem to be best suited, as he proved at Liverpool when was one of the best players in the Premier League.

‘At Arsenal, Tottenham or Leicester, Coutinho could be a regular starter next season. It would be a good opportunity for the Brazillian to rediscover his best form and show that he continues in order to be an excellent player who belongs to the elite. ’
